SELF

How much of what I call “myself” have I actually examined?

We speak easily about who we are. But self-description is not yet self-knowledge. The SELF path examines the distance between self-image and examined self-understanding — through memory, embodiment, desire, relation, vulnerability and change.

THE FIRST DISTINCTION

SELF-IMAGE ≠ SELF-KNOWLEDGE

Think of one sentence you often use to describe yourself. Then ask:

  • Where did this description come from?
  • When did I begin to believe it?
  • Who else has reinforced it?
  • What experience does it leave out?

Self-knowledge begins when self-description becomes examinable.

THE METHOD

THE EPHILO METHOD

A way of returning to the self without turning the self into a fixed object.

1

SELF-IMAGE

Notice the story you currently tell about yourself.

2

EXAMINE

Ask how that story was formed.

3

EXPERIENCE

Return to what has actually been lived.

4

DESIRE

Notice what you want, fear, avoid and protect.

5

OTHER

Ask how other people shape what you see in yourself.

6

NON-FINALITY

Refuse to treat the present self-description as complete.

7

RETURN

Revisit the self with greater precision.
